Treasurer - Collector

The Treasurer/Collector’s office is responsible for billing and collection of real estate, personal property, and motor vehicle excise taxes, and the receipt of various permits and licenses. In addition, the department is responsible for reconciliation of bank accounts, long and short-term investments, long and short-term borrowing, maintaining tax title accounts, payroll processing, income tax reporting, and benefit administration for active and retired employees (health, dental, disability and life insurance).

   The Treasurer/Collector’s office receives, manages and disperses all funds of the Town in accordance with Massachusetts General Laws and the  Town of Whately Financial Policies.

Real Estate and Personal Property Taxes

Tax bills are mailed four times a fiscal year and are due quarterly:

The 1st quarter is mailed on or before June 30th.       

The 1st quarter is due August 1st.

The 2nd quarter is mailed on or before September 30th.

The 2nd quarter is due November 1st.

The 3rd quarter is mailed on or before December 31st

The 3rd quarter is due on  February 1st.

The 4th quarter is mailed on or before March 31st

The 4th quarter is due on May 1st 

If the first falls on a weekend, the bills are due the following Monday.

If you recently purchased a property and did not receive your bill, please call the Tax Collector's office at (413)665-4400 ext.2

If you received a bill for a property you have recently sold, you may disregard the bill as it is the responsibility of the new owner to seek out the bill.

Important Notice Regarding Your Online Bank's Bill Pay Service:

If you are paying a bill through your bank's bill pay service, please reference the Parcel ID in the memo and use the mailing address of 4 Sandy Lane, South Deerfield, MA 01373. The online bill  payments are mailed from your bank with no remittance stub, which can delay the posting of your tax payment.

Motor Vehicle Excise Tax

Motor Vehicle Excise bills were mailed January 31, 2023 and are due on March 3, 2023.
Please make sure payment arrives on or before March 3rd.  Postmarks do not count.
You may pay in person at the Treasurer/Collector's office during business hours, by mail, online (as long as they aren't past due) at this website under Pay Bills on the home page or in the drop box outside the Town Offices at 4 Sandy Lane.
