Town Clerk/Board of Registrars

TOWN CLERK

The office of Town Clerk traditionally, and to a large degree presently, can be compared to a hub around which the wheel of local government revolves.  The spokes of the wheel represent the various boards, departments and committees within the government to which the Town Clerk relates in a direct way.  The rim of the wheel represents the many segments of State and County Government from which many of the Town Clerk's official duties and responsibilities stem. The Town Clerk's position as it stands today, can best be described as a curious blending of official duties and responsibilities as spelled out in 73 chapters and 451 sections of the General Laws, and the By-Laws of the 351 towns in the Commonwealth; semiofficial duties and responsibilities with customs and practices which have evolved over the years and vary somewhat from town to town, and finally, unofficial but vital functions which Town Clerks perform because of natural tendency of citizens to seek out the Town Clerk as a source of information, aid or assistance in regard to almost any aspect of town affairs, services or functions

The Whately Town Clerk is the custodian of the official records and documents of the Town. The Town Clerk is in charge of vitals and statistics, issuing birth, marriages and death certificates, dog licenses, business certificates, and conducts the Town Census. The Town Clerk is in charge of voter registrations and information,  runs all Town/State/Federal Elections. The Clerk is also responsible for posting all public notices.

THE BOARD OF REGISTRARS

The Board of Registrars of Voters is comprised of four members. The Town Clerk is an ex officio member and the other 3 members are appointed by the Selectboard. The Town Clerk's Office/ Board of Registrars registers all voters and conducts elections in strict conformance with state law.
